Flavors of Life is my first interdisciplinary game developed during my freshmen year in 2020, where I worked with team members from the school's Fine Arts degree program.
It is a role-playing and narrative-centric fishing game where you play as Sameow, a Fishercat living with his grandfather, Grandpaw on an island seaside. The game takes Sameow through the four seasons with Grandpaw, depicting events which bring the family of two closer together through a journey of happiness, hardship, and redemption.
My roles: Producer, Lead Designer, Storywriter, Visual Effects Artist
Being the producer of the team, my job was to manage, allocate, and balance my team's manpower in the design, technical, and art aspects of the game. My team worked in sprints which lasted 2 weeks each, where I would create reports that showed the team's objectives, allocated workload, backlogs, priority lists, and learning points.
As the Lead Designer, I was responsible for creating a game design document detailing the game's vision, gameplay mechanics, aesthetic direction and storyline. In addition, my job included the building of game scenes in Unity Engine with custom assets, writing the game's storyline and character dialogues, as well as creating various visual effects such as falling leaves, rain, background parallax, lighting, and ambient activity. I was also responsible for the selection of appropriate music for the game through the school's sound library.
Key Takeaways
Through developing this game, I have gained invaluable experience in improving my soft skills such as communicating my game direction to my team effectively, as well as keeping an open and active channel of communication with my executive producers and lecturers. I have also managed to gain a deeper understanding of using the scene manager in Unity Engine and its powerful animator and effects component.
